Left-wing pragmatism
Left-wing pragmatism is a way of choosing means. It names a reformist habit: social results, pursued through the institutions, budgets, and coalitions that can actually pass them. It is not a separate result on this test.
A definition for reading a result against. Not an endorsement, and not one of the 38 names the test can return.
A method, not a manifesto
The words do not name one manifesto or one founder. People use them for a left that still wants less inequality, broader public services, and political equality, and that treats a revolutionary break as the wrong tool. The work is legislation, negotiation, and governing. A change that can be voted and administered comes before a purity test.
That habit is easy to confuse with having no direction. It is not a centre that splits every difference in half. It is also easy to confuse with the whole of social democracy. Social democracy is a longer tradition, with its own published reference position on this site. Left-wing pragmatism is one method inside and around that tradition, including people who would not take the party name.
It is not democratic socialism's further step toward collective ownership of key industries, and it is not revolutionary socialism, which holds that capitalism cannot be reformed away. Those are different results the test can return. Left-wing pragmatism is not an extra dot in the list.
What the axes can show
Economy runs from Collectivize to Privatize. A left pragmatist sketch sits toward Collectivize: public services, a narrower gap, some shared stake in major goods. It does not sit at the far end, where private enterprise is gone. Control, from Planned to Laissez-faire, is the companion axis. The method accepts regulation and public direction and stops short of a command economy. The test scores both. It does not score a willingness to compromise.
Representation stays toward Democratic. The method needs elections, parliaments, and unions that can force a bargain. Culture is often toward Progressive, because many people who use the label also want civil equality, but the word pragmatism does not require a culture score. Two people can share the label and disagree about religion, trade, or immigration. Those disagreements have their own axes.
There is no axis for method. Two people can share an Economy score and differ about whether to use the parliament in front of them. The twelve scores describe the statements you accepted. They do not describe your patience. The nearest names are social democracy, democratic socialism, and progressivism, depending on the rest of the profile.
Names the test can return instead
Each chart is that ideology's published position. Left-wing pragmatism has no reference position of its own.
- Social Democracy
Social democracy is the closest published tradition: private enterprise remains, with strong public services, unions, and taxes that hold inequality down. A lot of what people call left-wing pragmatism is this sketch, plus a preference for steps that can pass. The chart is social democracy's reference position.

Democratic socialism aims at a socialist economy reached by democratic means, with public or cooperative ownership of key industries. It sits further toward Collectivize. Someone may borrow its goals and refuse its pace, or the reverse. The test keeps the two as different points.

Progressivism on this site is the reform current for social equality, civil rights, and deliberate change, with a fully progressive culture score. It overlaps a pragmatic left and it is not a statement about legislative tactics. Read it for the culture and diplomacy scores, not as a synonym.

Questions about left-wing pragmatism
What is left-wing pragmatism?
A reformist tendency on the left. It keeps social goals, such as broader public services and less inequality, and pursues them through existing institutions, budgets, and coalitions rather than through a revolutionary break. It is not a single manifesto.
Is left-wing pragmatism the same as centrism?
No. Centrism on this site is a preference for the middle. Left-wing pragmatism has a direction, toward the egalitarian side of the economic axes, and is pragmatic about the steps. A centre score and a social-democratic score are different results.
Is it the same as social democracy?
Social democracy is the nearest named tradition among the 38, and many people who say left-wing pragmatism mean something close to it. The phrase describes a method. Social democracy is a program with its own reference position. The test can return social democracy. It cannot return left-wing pragmatism.
Can the 12 Axes test measure how pragmatic I am?
No. The statements score twelve values, not your willingness to compromise. Read Economy, Control, and Representation for the substance, and treat the nearest ideology as a sketch of those scores.
